I wish you would/could run without bringing into question your blackness or un-blackness.

Anyways...check out the speach:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPDFuNW55uA

I found it interesting.

So I was researching internships for the summer today and I found a rather promising group at the Getty. It's close to home and even involves ancient art. How awesome! I read on, the stipend is pretty good and I'm qualified if not overqualified. This is totally gonna make my day!

And then I get to the part where it proudly exclaims that all Getty internships are offered to groups under-represented in the museum field. Oh dear...that is NOT promising. But no worries, I've seen this before I must just be looking at the wrong internship. I click back to the main menu only to discover that these are the only internships that the Getty offers. You must be well qualified by the color of your skin. What a wonderful and objective requirement.

How is someone more qualified for an internship that will open doors for them in their career by virtue of their skin color? How am I any less qualified because my parents happen to be of German and English descent? I had always been proud of my heritage and all the yummy family recipes that came with it. But now apparently that makes me inferior.

Gotta love that affirmative action.

Gotta love the Getty in all their racist glory.

Lilith

Has anyone heard of the myth of Lilith?

I have been reading about it and I find it fascinating and incredibly alluring: the idea of a Christian figure of feminine independence and power. Here is my favorite:

"After God created Adam, who was alone, He said, 'It is not good for man to be alone' (Gen. 2:18). He then created a woman for Adam, from the earth, as He had created Adam himself, and called her Lilith. Adam and Lilith began to fight. She said, 'I will not lie below,' and he said, 'I will not lie beneath you, but only on top. For you are fit only to be in the bottom position, while am to be in the superior one.' Lilith responded, 'We are equal to each other inasmuch as we were both created from the earth.' But they would not listen to one another. When Lilith saw this, she pronounced the Ineffable Name and flew away into the air. Adam stood in prayer before his Creator: 'Sovereign of the universe!' he said, 'the woman you gave me has run away.' At once, the Holy One, blessed be He, sent these three angles to bring her back."

It reminds me vaguely of rizwank's post about weather or not female dominance and self assertion is unattractive to men. It does give a bit of weight behind the concept that men don't like women who are not submissive to think that we have it has been engrained into our society for thousands of years, but one would hope modern men would have gotten past that....

Anyways I just find the concept of Lilith intriguing, even if she only took the form of "first woman" in the middle ages and her routes are really in a Sumerian and Mesopotamian deamoness.

<lj:music>"Im Alright" by Jo Dee Messina</lj:music>

I had a good weekend. I got to spend a bit of time with an old friend who is moving far away. I threw him a party on Friday night. I am still hearing rave reviews. (I think I've got my touch back...that or it's a unique skill for parties I throw for others.)

I hit Rocky Saturday night. That was a good bit of fun. I dragged several friends including my ex-English comp professor. Then we observed and the social dynamics and mating rituals of the males of the group at Norms. The one we termed Alpha Male was my favorite. He had the most interesting behavioral patterns, but then Bernie tends to amuse me in general. (No offense intended. Remind me to send him much love.)

On Sunday I took an impromptu trip down to Oceanside. (My father's friend has a timeshare and he invited the family down) It was back to work on Monday and then back down to Oceanside. That five and a half hour commute was an experience. Orange county drivers are officially more prone to attempting to change lanes into you then LA drives. Maybe LA drivers are just more competent at the asshole-ish driving. Thank god for that. I came back yesterday morning and its back there tonight. I find the place rather pleasant. I love walking on the beach with my mum. Simple but pleasant. I'll be out of touch for a bit, but back in LA Sunday night, or afternoon maybe.

I'll be joining the Rocky group going to IC in San Diego, if I can mange to find out where exactly that is. Where's Xach when you need him?

Note to self: That's twice in a week. When exactly did I become a Rocky groupie?

But um...that’s life and I’m having a good bit of fun with it.

People this is Southern California. There was a small earthquake. As far as I know the most damage was a broken lamp or two. Is this supposed to be big news? Making a big deal out of this is like saying "Oh My God! It SNOWED in New York in December!" Is this shocking? Is this news to you? Did you somehow miss the fact that this city and its neighbors are built on or near not one fault but several? A thunderstorm would be more noteworthy.

(Actually come to think of it, I could go for a good thunderstorm right now. <lj:music>Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer...dont ask</lj:music>

So I know I'm a bit late on this, but I just read Mycenae's post and it inspired me. So here is the abbreviated version of my thoughts on the book:

She only killed four out of the twenty some people that we knew were fighting at Hogwarts...what sort of half their number dying was that? That’s like a sixth! I just keep thinking of the picture of the old Order where nearly everyone was dead or insane, but the new order lost only a minimal number of members, most of whom were already old. There were only two casualties in the new order who were not in the old order.

She totally should have killed more Weasley's its just not fair for so many of them to have survived, it diminishes the significance of the threat of Voldemort.

Albus Severus? Whatever happened to Sirius? Did he not die and was he not less of a dick to Harry and there for him more then either Snape or Dumbledore ever was? Why doesn't he get a kid named after him? A middle name maybe?

...Seriously, think about it. Superman is weak to magic.

I have this headache you see. It is the superman of headaches. It is the goliath of headaches, the wolverine of headaches. It manifested itself around 2 AM Saturday morning after two gin and tonics. Nothing special about them, they were really just gin and tonics, maybe a little strong on the gin, but that was it. At first I thought it was a hangover, a rather undeserved one, but maybe my body really didnt like the gin. So aproximately twenty four hours of sleep, gallons of water, some tums, and many hundred miligrams of advil later it is still alive. Aparently it mearly acompanied a hangover, because the hangover is gone, but it remains. It is a truely amazing headache. Any suggestions.

BTW: Why is it that the episode of Dr. Who I want to watch is always half broken. I can watch the first half but not the second. This is a truely unfair way for things to break. I mean couldnt we make a deal with the powers that be? Lets makes a full half of the episodes entirely broken, rather then all of them half broken? Sound good to you God? Heck I'll even give up a full 60 percent if it means I can watch some of them all the way through. Does that work for you God? Goddess? Buddha? Shiva? Murphey?

<lj:music>"I can't decide wheather you should live or die" by the Scissor Sisters</lj:music>

Having forgot my breakfast in the microwave this morning I decided to run down to the restaurant in the lobby to grab a bit of food. Muffin in hand I was about to leave the register when I hear my name said somewhere to the right of me so I answer tentatively. As it turns out our receptionist without having seen me leave somehow knew that I was down there and wanted me to bring up a menu for her. It's uncanny! She can pinpoint you location in the building to about 5 feet. She knows what phone you're near when you're walking to the bathroom. Its freakish and unnatural. I feel like I’m being watched...does she have cameras or psychic ability or something? It reminds me of that Lolcat quiz that was going around a week ago. She IS the ceiling cat! I just hope she can’t see me when I'm in the bathroom…
